Hyderabad: The Telangana government seems to have got more than it bargained for as the Centre cleared 82 new All India Service posts for the state on Monday , the highest in the country . But, the government is unsure when it will get the officers from the Centre to fill up these posts.
Plagued with shortage of officers, the Telangana government had requested the Centre to allot more posts to meet the needs of governance.

During his recent visit to New Delhi, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao also apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi about shortage of IAS, IPS and IFS officers in the newly-formed state.
Accordingly , the Centre has sanctioned 44 IAS, 29 IPS and 9 IFS posts to the state.
The department of personnel and training (DoPT) has acceded to the state's request and sent it to the Prime Minister's Office for final approval. The new posts will be filled up in a span of four to five years.
“The DoPT has cleared the proposal put forth by the state government and we are getting additional posts of IAS, IPS and IFS officers. The file is now awaiting the PM's signature,“ principal secretary of general administration (political), Adhar Sinha told TOI.
Post bifurcation, 163 posts of IAS, 112 IPS and 65 IFS officers (including promotees) were sanctioned to Telangana.
But in reality , the state got only 128 IAS, 92 IPS and 56 IFS officers based on available cadre strength in the erstwhile AP.Andhra Pradesh had a total authorized strength of 376 IAS, 258 IPS and 149 IFS officers.

But, not counting the officers on central deputation and retirements, Telangana ended up with 110 IAS, 80 IPS and 49 IFS officers, which is 40 per cent less than the authorized cadre strength.
This forced the government to write to the Centre to increase the cadre strength and it finally received the Centre's nod.
While dozens of IAS officers are holding additional charge of different departments due to lack of sufficient numbers, there is also a dearth of promotee officers due to cap on the cadre strength.
Of the total 120 departments, more than 20 have no head of department and most of the officers are shouldering multiple responsibilities.
With the TRS government coming out with a new programme every month, it has become a herculean task for the officers to attend to their additional duties.
Various government programmes like Mission Kakatiya, Mission Bhagiratha, double-bedroom houses construction, Shadi Mubarak, TS-IPass and T-hub, among other schemes, also need new officers
